ROUGH CARPENTRY

STORAGE

Storage

Lumber delivered to the site shall be carefully stockpiled off the ground in such a manner as to ensure proper drainage, ventilation and protection from the weather.

Protection

Protect all wood products from damage in shipping and storage at project site. Woodwork items shall not be delivered until building and/or storage areas are sufficiently dry so that woodwork will not be damaged by excessive changes in moisture content.

MATERIALS, LUMBER AND WOODWORK

General

All lumber and wood items to be furnished and installed shall conform to the UNI general standards indicated in paragraph 1.1 and shall conform to the type and grade described hereinafter. Wood showing signs of warp, grain deviation, shakes, cracks, mold, stain, rot, insect damage, or other injurious defects will be rejected.

General rough carpentry lumber shall be common type pine or other wood suitable for general utility and construction purposes. Lumber in permanent construction shall be of the first grade, common type, which is sound, tight knotted, watertight, straight, if it is not required to have fine finishing qualities. Lumber for temporary construction shall be common lumber of low quality allowing some defects and coarse uneven texture.

Wood Nailers, Sleepers and Blocking set in or on exterior concrete, masonry and/or insulation shall be given a preservation treatment. The treatment shall consist of impregnation by submersion in hot creosote-tar solution or other approved preservative liquid produced by a reputable manufacturer. No field treatment of wood is allowed.

Exterior Grade Plywood

Each sheet of plywood shall bear the mark of a recognized association or independent inspection agency that maintains continuing control over the quality of the plywood. The mark shall identify the plywood and show exposure durability classification grade. The plywood shall be suitable for exposed condition usage and shall be maintained using preservation treatment methods.

Moisture Content


Boards and dimension lumber not over 50 mm in normal thickness to be incorporated in the structure, except finish material, shall be kilndried or air-dried, and moisture content shall not exceed 19%. Moisture content of lumber over 50 mm in nominal thickness shall conform to the rules under which it is graded and may be incorporated in the structure without further seasoning. Exterior and interior finishing lumber shall be kiln-dried and at the time of delivery to the building site, the moisture content shall not exceed 12% for material 25 mm or less in thickness, and shall not exceed 14% for material over 25 mm in thickness.

MATERIALS OTHER THAN LUMBER

Materials other than lumber shall conform to the specifications and other requirements specified hereinafter.

Bolts and Nuts

Bolts and nuts shall be of size and type best suited for the purpose, or as shown. Clamps, Expansion Bolts, Expansion Screws, Washers, and Anchors shall be of steel or iron and of a standard type and manufacture.

Glue

Glue shall be water resistant casein or other approved moisture resistant type. Lag Screws, Nails and Wood Screws shall be of the type, size and finish best suited for the purpose.

Steel Plate Pipes and Shapes

Items involving steel plate pipes and shapes shall be made of steel of the type, grade and class normally used in commercial practice.Wood Preservative Treatment Shall be manufactured by one of the following:

INSTALLATION

Framing lumber and other miscellaneous rough carpentry shall be fitted closely, set accurately to the required lines and levels, and shall be secured in place in a rigid and substantial manner. All framing members not indicated or specified shall be provided as necessary for the proper completion of the work. Bolting shall be done in an approved manner. Spikes, nails and bolts shall be drawn up tight.

Bracing and Shoring

For the support and protection of the structure during construction shall be strongly made, properly installed, and well secured in place to serve the intended purpose. Wood Roof Sleepers and Nailers, Edge Strips, Curbs, and Cants Shall be of the sizes and configurations indicated or specified and shall be anchored securely to continuous construction as indicated.

Wood Blocking

Shall be of proper sizes and shapes and provided at proper locations for the installation and attachment of wood and other finish materials, fixtures, equipment, and items indicated or specified.

Preservative Treatment

Where treated wood is field cut (after treatment), coat cut surfaces with creosote-tar or preservative liquid as specified.

Exterior Grade Plywood

Shall be of the thickness and configurations indicated or specified and shall be anchored securely to construction as indicated.
