IP Telephony System

Telephony System Description

The telephony project was developed based on technical specifications for connecting the new building via fiber optic network. The telecommunications provider supplies the building with 50 city phone lines, 20 Gbit/s internet, and digital TV.

telephony design

To provide the building with local, long-distance and international communication services, the project includes a voice IP gateway with media server functioning as the building's PBX. For operation with 64 direct city lines via analog telephone lines, analog line cards are provided. The PBX is equipped with three E1 stream cards for receiving 64 channels through three E1 streams.

To connect the PBX to city communication systems, E1 stream cards are connected with standard cable to the access switch. The building connects to city telephone networks according to technical specifications. Active equipment, media server, voice IP gateway with analog line cards and station cross-connect are installed in the server room on the 1st floor in a 19" cabinet.

The communication server processor complex is installed in a 19'' rack. The server supports up to 64 remote branches based on G450 gateways and up to 250 additional gateways that can be distributed over large distances via IP network.

Maximum server capacity: 8,000 trunk lines, 36,000 internal subscribers. Server processing capacity is 300,000 calls during peak hour.

Environmental requirements:

  • AC power
  • Recommended temperature from +10 to +35 degrees C
  • Recommended humidity from 8% to 80%

The server has DECT microcellular communication system connectivity. Equipment type selection and quantitative characteristics of the IP DECT system are described in subsection 3.6.

G450 Media Gateway

Multi-purpose data transmission gateway that can be used in medium and large branches, in buildings or floors with communication cabinets, as well as on enterprise territory. It works with IP telephony software that runs on servers, helping to organize intelligent communication for enterprises of any size.

G450 combines voice exchange and data network functionality, providing PSTN long-distance call routing, data routing and VoIP traffic through distributed WAN. G450 features Internet protocol voice transmission, optional WAN router and Ethernet LAN connectivity. G450 provides full support for digital and conventional phones, as well as analog devices such as modems, fax machines and telephones.

G450 can support up to 2400 users when used as an on-site gateway. User services require IP telephony software that runs on the server. Services on G450 are controlled by the server operating as External Call Controller or Internal Call Controller.

G450 is a scalable device. The basic configuration includes 1 power supply unit, 256 MB RAM and one additional DSP card supporting 20 or 80 VoIP channels. This configuration can be enhanced by adding redundant PSU, one or two 1 GB RAM modules, and up to three additional DSP cards increasing voice channels to 240.

G450 is a modular device adaptable to support various endpoint device combinations. While fixed front panel ports support external LAN switches, data network ports, WAN Ethernet lines and external routers, eight slots provide optional data module connectivity. Removable data modules provide interfaces for various types of devices, trunk lines and WAN channels. The combination meeting branch requirements is selected. Hardware modules provide full support for traditional equipment: analog and digital devices. WAN modules provide support for Universal Serial Port and E1 T1 WAN channels. Phones are supported via external LAN switch.

G450 gateway has 3U size and is designed for installation in 19-inch rack. Media Gateway has:

  • Main Board Module containing 80 DSP codec resources
  • Announcement resources, tone generators, processor for standard local survivability
  • Power supply units - one included, second optional for redundancy

Cooling System

The server with G450 cabinets operates via IP connect type, meaning IP environment is used both for server-gateway communication via H.248 protocol and for establishing calls between subscribers of different gateways.

G450 gateway details:

  • Dimensions height x width x depth: 133.3 mm x 482.6 mm x 460 mm
  • Weight in basic configuration: 14 kg

Power supply:

  • Power - 90-264 V AC, 48-62 Hz
  • DC - 48 V from -40 to -60 V
  • 21.0 A max

Recommended temperature from +5°C to +40°C, humidity 10% - 90%. G450 gateway heat dissipation - 0.52 kW.

The server and gateways are powered from 50 Hz 220V AC network. For ensuring uninterrupted operation of telecommunications equipment during short-term power outages, uninterruptible power supply installation is required.

G450 Gateway Characteristics

Gateway interfaces include two 10/100/1000 Base-T LAN ports, two 10/100 Base-T WAN ports, two USB ports, console and service ports, Contact closure adjunct port and ETR port for emergency calls during power failure.

Additional DSP codec resources can be installed in the gateway. Modular DSP resources are installed as daughter cards with 20 or 80 DSP resources to Main Board module. Maximum capacity is 240 channels. Codec support includes G.711, G.729 and G.726.

Maximum gateway capacity: up to 240 voice channels, 192 analog or digital ports, up to 8 T1/E1 and up to 10,000 Busy Hour Call Completions during peak load hour. Number of possible simultaneous two-way conversations with TDM transcoding between IP phone on one side and conventional device or trunk line on the other - 206.

The gateway has standard survivability features for communication loss with processor. Standard survivability provides internal basic functions for 150 subscribers and calls through analog and digital local trunks.

The gateway has secure management using SSH SCP, and SNMP v3.

Cable Connections

Distribution network is based on structured cabling system. For connecting 48 analog lines to the PBX, 50-pair cable is used. Cable for connecting 8 direct city numbers to the PBX is provided in the structured cabling system section.

Power Supply

G450 gateway power cord must comply with VDE or HAR standards, voltage 250V, 3-conductor with ground wire, minimum cross-sectional area should be 1.0 mm². One end of the cord must connect to surface connector standard VDE CE IEC 60320, type C13 with frequency 10 A, 250 V, the other end must connect to 3-conductor grounded socket with minimum values of 10 A, 250 V.

Power supply for active equipment is provided according to 1st reliability category. For this purpose, the electrical project provides a separate circuit breaker. Also, the server room includes air conditioner installation providing 21 kW cooling for normal communication equipment operation.
